All the dmd year 2 students will be redesigning a site for This Fashion!!
To be truthful, when I saw their site, I was shocked!!! But then again it’s This Fashion and it’s Singapore.
Let’s take a look at fashion shop/(anything that is selling something) websites and Singapore sites!
http://www.esprit.com
http://www.topshop.com
http://www.forever21.com
http://www.aeropostale.com
https://www.coffeesupreme.com this is by resn(from my earlier post)
Singapore sites:
http://www.foxfashion.sg (I thought this was pretty bad .__.;;)
http://www.giordano.com.sg (you got to be kidding me?! Bronken images… links hidden behind a image… is this really Giodarno?!)
http://www.giordano.com.hk/web/HK/index.html (.__. much better compared to the previous link what was that?!)
http://www.starbucks.com.sg compare this with http://www.starbucks.com
http://www.charleskeith.com O__O this is one of the better ones so far!
GOOD LUCK US!!! I’m starting to understand how hard it is to make a good website… No wonder a lot of Singapore websites are so bad…
May we grow into better web designers!!!
Visit http://www.thisfashion.com.sg/ and make an analysis by answering the following questions:
How do you find this site? (in 3 words)
Boring, simple & direct.
Who do you think the site is created for?
- Customers of This Fashion.
- People interested in shopping at This Fashion.
- An age group ranging from teenagers to working adults.
What are the good attributes of the site (in terms of usability, aesthetic issues, etc)?
- Information is organized.
- Simple and clean site
- All links working and site navigation is simple and user-friendly.
What are the bad attributes of the site?
- The look of the site does not fit the company. It is a site for a clothes store, hence it should look more trendy and fashionable.
- The color scheme doesn’t look good, and it has nothing to do with the company color scheme?
Here are some ideas that I came up with~
A tribute to side-scrollers:
I was thinking about games and suddenly this idea popped into my head. Why not do a website based on side-scrollers? From the classic Mario to Braid and Odinsphere. Side-scrollers are just fun!
But then there’s the technical side to every idea when it comes to websites!! Functionality? I was reading what forums have to say about side-scroll websites here what someone said. “A lot of people are not big fans of the horizontal scrollbar… some people probably wont notice it and will miss the content.”
Hmmmm so is it a good or bad idea to do a side-scroller for a portfolio website?
To answer that I have to ask myself some questions regarding my site.
Main point of the site:
To display my portfolio in an simple and elegant manner in which people will enjoy browsing it. End result that I want is to get hired!!!
What is going to be in the site? :
Information about me, show reel (video), portfolio (mainly images).
Which side is the site leaning more towards to? Functionality or esthetics?
I would like to say esthetics because it’s more fun… But in the end this site is made for a purpose and is not an experimental site.
Okay here are some side-scrolling websites.
After looking at the sites, I’m leaning towards not doing a side-scrolling website. Main reason being that the scroll doesn’t work when it not vertical. BUT!!! Sursly.com shows us that it’s possible to have the scroll work with the horizontal scroll…
Clean and simple:
So if I decide not to do a side-scrolling website then I think I’ll go for the simple style.
Simple & clean that get’s your point across.
Who said simple can’t be cool and funky!! Okay it’s going to be hard to think up of something good but I’ll try my best!!! Wish me luck!

And so here’s another Web design Q&A from my class.
What is browser-safe color palette/ Web-safe colors
216 colors out of the 256 colors that the old computers supported.
The remaining 40 colors varied on the PC and Mac.
Is it still relevant in today’s context? And why?
No it isn’t as computers now support millions of colors. And fewer people view the web in 256 colors.
What are the common fonts face found on PC & Mac?
What is page loading time? And how will it influence your design?
It’s the amount taken to load a certain web page. Things that effect the loading time are images, applications
I ran a web page analyzer on this blog. Some of the results are below.
| Object type | Size (bytes) | Download @ 56K (seconds) | Download @ T1 (seconds) |

Web Design Workflow and Process Comparison
Read the web process article above and write what you think about it.(150 min words)
SO many different ways of coming up with a website!!! So many things one needs to consider.
Basically, you would start the same way you start any other art project.
1. RESEARCH
-Understand your project, and come up with a good concept.
- Know what is required of the website.
- Explore and learn for similar websites.
-Thumbnails, sketches.
- Typography
- Colors
- Composition
-Editing of ideas.
2. Mock up!!!! To get your ideas approved.
3. Development!
-CSS
-HTML
-Making it work!
- Design might be changed a little at this point.
- TEST! TEST! TEST!
- Browser test!
4. LAUNCH
- Link check
- CHECK CHECK CHECK.
5. POST LAUNCH
-Maintaining your site ^__-
Yep the links were all very useful!!! From all the differnet style of working, you can see a similar work flow.
Visualization –> Draft–> Production –> Launch –> Post launch
This work flow is pretty important as things get harder to change after the productions starts.
YAY I 166 words!!!!
Set up a blog on Wordpress and answer these questions.
What are the browser names that you know?
Oprah, Safari, Internet Explorer
And the browser that I prefer to use… Firefox
What is “browser wars”?
Judging from its name, I guessed that it suggests a struggle over dominance between the different browsers. After a little research from Wikkipedia, I learnt that it started between Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer. As we know, at one point most people were using Internet Explorer. But soon many would make the change. This happened when Mozilla made Firefox. Other browser names also started to pop up. And soon the general public came to realize that Internet Explorer was not the only browser available. That’s my simple take on the browser wars.
What is an IP address?
IP stands for internet protocol. It acts as an address for all the devices that are connected to the network.
What is a URL?
URL stands for uniform resource locator. Here is an example of a URL. http://paperclover.com A URL contains a domain name.
What is a good website?
Something that doesn’t scar my eyes.
A website that has links that make sense.
Good navigation.
Not confusing.
Here take a look at some nice examples!
